Announcements for the 2025 season

Peter Mannion

All members of the Macclesfield & District Bowling Association were saddened to hear of the passing of our President, Peter Mannion, on 16th July.

It is no exaggeration to say that without Peter, this Association might not be here as it is today, as he helped to keep things running when volunteers weren't so forthcoming. For many years, Peter served the bowling community with his unique combination of dedication, wit, organisation, and determination to help clubs and bowlers enjoy taking part in the sport they love so much.

From the weekly match reports that entertained the local community in the Macclesfield Express, to liaising with Cheshire County, to handicapping our Floodlit Competition, moving our results into a digital world, liaising with sponsorship partners, and engraving the trophies to hand out at Presentation Night, Peter's committment to helping the bowling community was invaluable. He took a lot on his shoulders without complaint, and imparted his wisdom in helping the league continue to flourish up until the present day.

Sadly, Peter succumbed to dementia in recent months. However, all who knew him will remember him at his best - a generous, buoyant character, with an infectious energy and enthusiasm.

For those who wish to honour his life, the funeral service will take place at 11am on Wednesday, 20th August at The Parish Church of St James the Great, Gawsworth, followed by a private Service of Committal taking place at Macclesfield Crematorium. Hayman Trophy - Sunday 27th April

On a warm and sunny day at Wilmslow Conservative Club, we received excellent hospitality from the club and were treated to some great bowling on the green!

Early form suggested Ryan Pountley would be difficult to beat, but David Read put paid to that in the quarter-final with a comprehensive 21-3 victory. In the other quarters, homester - and last year's winner - Nigel Forde-Dunlop ran out a 21-14 winner against Darren Johnson, Dave Ford beat Jake Jackson 21-11, and Mike Watkins won 21-17 against Mark Bowers.

The semi-finals were both close encounters, with some very good bowling in both. Dave Ford edged ahead against Mike Watkins, but Mike was never far behind and the game went to the wire. Mike was lying game as Dave's last bowl came in, and looked like it was going to stop in time to win the end, but just pegged away and out at the last to give Mike a 21-20 win.

In the other semi-final, Nigel Forde-Dunlop and David Read went head-to-head with some fine bowling from both men, but Nigel edged the game 21-18 to set up a final between the reigning champion and a player in fine form on the day.

Mike Watkins raced into a 10-1 lead in the final, but Nigel Forde-Dunlop fought back with some good bowling into the corners both ways. It looked like Nigel might have Mike under pressure for a while, but before long, Mike's consistency shone through and he ran out a worthy 21-11 winner!

Well done to everyone who took part this year, and big thanks to Wilmslow Conservative Club for welcoming us, feeding us good food, and keeping everyone oiled throughout the day!

The full competition results can be viewed here, or under 'Tables' at the top of this page.

Don't forget to enter our next competition, the Stan Mason Luck of the Draw Pairs, taking place on Sunday 25th May at Macclesfield Bowling Club. Get your entries in now to avoid disappointment!
